Vlaanderen Fietsroute

(Continue…)

GR 12 Ronquières to Ecaussines

P1000451  Today we continue where we left off in Ronquières near the inclining plateau. This part of the GR 12 is very pleasant and i would recommend it any sunny sunday walk. Bring along your friends and family, there’s not many hills and you can easily scale the trip to fit your own capacities.

We are blessed with excellent weather on this late September day and a lot of fellow hikers have taken to the paths. The route goes up the canal to the impressive concrete tower and then turns into the fields. It’s harvesting time and the corn fields are waiting for the farmers. (Continue…)

Swimming in Brussels

Brussels has no less than 19 public (indoor) swimming pools, ranging from the very modern to very classic. Here’s an overview of my favorites and the main swimming pools, their prices and official websites. (Continue…)

Biking from Leuven to Brussels

Leuven has the woods of Heverlee, Brussels has the Foret De Soignes and i have a mountainbike. So what’s the best thing to do on a sunny summers day? Right, you ask your girlfriend to drop you off in Haasrode (near Leuven) and try to get back to Brussels. Without any map, of course … it would be way too easy otherwise :) (Continue…)

In dutch of in het Engels

One of the major issues we still have with our blog is of we nu enkel in het Engels of soms toch ook in het Nederlands gaan posten. The major advantage of posting in English is that (almost) everyone can understand it, maar het Nederlands blijft toch net iets makkelijker voor de Oma’s en de Opa’s en misschien ook wel voor de Mama’s en de Papa’s.

That’s why you should not be suprised wanneer je hier dus ook af en toe iets in het Nederlands tegenkomt. :-)

Hiking is boring?

Yesterday we went hiking in Huldenberg, a village between Brussels and Tervuren. It was our first hike since we were back from Switzerland and we found it a bit boring. Our excursion was set out to be one of 20 kms, but we’ve cut it short to 14km and even then, we thought it was too long. Perhaps we were spoiled in the mountains, having yaw-dropping views at every corner, walking on the top of mountains and along cascading cliffs. This is very bad news for our walking habits. With only 6 weeks to go before we set out for Asia, we can use all of the training that we can get.

GR 12 Brussels to Ittre

dsc03542.JPGWe’ve recently discovered the pleasure of hiking along white and red signs across the country. If you ever go outside in Belgium, you’ve certainly noticed them and wondered: what is this. Well, they’re indication for walking trails and they’re are absolutely great!

We’ve done quite a few of them in the past months and there’s one that we’re trying to follow for a longer period: the GR 12. By longer period, i mean that we walk about 20-30kms of it, but always return back to our starting point and our car. So we’re not progressing all that fast :) (Continue…)

Walking in the dark in Herbeumont

No need to go all that far to experience something unique. For example in Herbeumont (Belgian Ardennes), you’ll walk along an abandoned railway which leads over a bridge and through a pitch black tunnel. When we were there, we were all alone in the tunnel and it’s kind of creepy. Be sure to bring a torch because it’s very wet and there’s a lot of rocks. (Continue…)

Mix & Match

So we’re completely in the progress of selecting which countries we’d like to see and which not. There’s enormous amounts of information on the web, but what’s for real?

This site seems at least very objective and is well-done: http://travelindependent.info/asia-southeast.htm
