GR 12 Ittre to Ronquières
This story was posted under the categories: Stories, Walking the GR 12
Today we were joined by two friends to continue our exploratioun of the GR 12. We started where we left off, near Ittre at the Canal Brussels Charleroi. Since our fellow walkers weren’t all that well trained, we headed out for a “short” walk of about 4-5 hours, following the GR up to Ronquières and then tracking back along the canal side.
The first part of the path follows the ancient canal, a diverse biotope of faune and flore. After passing a particulary irritating section, infested by stinging nettles (Dutch: brandnetels) we ascend up to Virginal. The road is pretty straight-forward and just what you expect from a GR in this region, small paths interchanged with short sections of paved roads until you enter the Bois de Hennuyères.
As i live close to the Foret De Soignes, Belgium’s largest forest, i’m used to seeing some green, but i can tell you that this forest is awesome. Walking there is a real pleasure and i could spot plenty of great mountainbike trails. If time permits, i’ll surely head back to do some biking there.
Unfortunately, within the forest, we miss a roadsplit and get sidetracked on to the GR 121. We head back 4 kilometers and rejoin the GR 12 in Ecaussines. With the river Senette on our right and the woodlands on the left, we reach the canal and finish our circle. Because of our detour, our trip takes almost 6 hours and with a big “FINALLY” we reach the cars. Again a couple of kilometers closer to Paris
