Comparing Travel Insurances

This story was posted under the categories: Big Asia Trip

There’s quite a number of praticalities to arrange before you set off on a long trip and finding a decent travel insurance is certainly one of the most important points. Usually, standard travel insurances do not cover long trips (longer than 3 months). That’s why you’ll have to gather a lot of informaton, read a lot of small prints and compare the different travel insurances.

To give you a head start, we’re happy to share our own investigation with you. Know that we are not affiliated in any way with any of the insurance companies and that our sheet is the result of our own reading from the general conditions (and that we might have missed some smaller points). So don’t rely solely on our sheet to chose what’s right for you!

Since we’re Belgium-based, we selected 3 companies that are pretty wellknown in Belgium: Europe Assistance, VAB, Mondial Assistance and we also included Elvia, as it received great praise from other world travellers.

Europe Assistance Prestige would have been the winner, but their call center was unable to answer my simple questions such as: “am i insured in Indonesia and Myanmar”? They told me that it depends on the advise of the Foreign Ministry and that i should call their office. Needless to say that this isn’t the kind of service i’m expecting from somebody who i need to trust in times of trouble.

Mondial Assistance World Protection was more than 2 times as expensive as VAB, making it the most expensive insurance company in the list.

Elvia Globetrotter has a very large coverage at a pretty decent price, but we were not confident that we would get the same coverage in Belgium as many of the terms were specifically about The Netherlands and the Dutch.

VAB Gezinspolis Compact (with additional luggage insurance) provided the best quality for an affordable price. They are okay in the compensations and have a very large coverage.
